CYCLING BIO

In 1991 a caravan manufacturer backed a little known female cyclist, in her bid for Olympic success.

It was Kathy Watt and she won gold, in the road race, at the 1992 Games, in Barcelona.

Gerry Ryan was hooked.

In 1993 Gerry started the Jayco Cycling team, which took all before it on the domestic scene and spent part of the season racing in the U.S.A. This team continued until the end of the 1995 season.

At the same time he also threw his support behind the Victorian Institute of Sport.

This expanded to supporting the Australian Institute of Sport, in 1996. Support that continues to this day, across the track, road and mountain bikes.

Gerry, through his company Jayco Caravans, has also been the major sponsors of the national mountain series, the Jayco Herald Sun Tour, the Jayco Bay Cycling Classic and a stage of the Tour Down Under, among many others.

In 2012 he launched Australia’s first WorldTour team, GreenEDGE, which included both a men’s a women’s team.

Both of these teams have had great success of the world’s biggest races.

There isn’t an elite Australian cyclist in the past 20 years who hasn’t, directly or indirectly, benefited from the support of Gerry Ryan.
